The Power of Socialising Sex
(with Cindy Gallop - Founder & CEO of MakeLoveNotPorn)
Last month, at TTI’s first Keynote event, we welcomed Cindy Gallop, Founder & CEO of MakeLoveNotPorn. MakeLoveNotPorn – ‘Pro-sex. Pro-porn. Pro-knowing the difference’ - is a social sextech platform designed to promote good sexual behavior and good sexual values, which she launched at TED 2009, and for which she has just raised $2million to build out mlnp.tv as ‘the Social Sex Revolution’.
In this article, Cindy talks about the importance of female-lens sextech for sustainability and transformative global
societal impact. Cindy also speaks about how socialising sex has the power to end rape culture and why investing in sexual health and happiness is key to everyone’s safety. MLNP sets out to offer a feminist counterpoint to the world of mainstream pornography, the article explains her visions for a safer world surrounding societal attitudes towards sex.
“Sex education through real world demonstration”
Last month, at TTI’s first Keynote event, we welcomed Cindy Gallop, Founder & CEO of MakeLoveNotPorn.
In 1989, Cindy joined one of the fastest growing agencies in Europe, Bartle Bogle Hegarty. After all her success in the agency world, Gallop resigned as chairman of BBH in 2005 to do something different. She launched MakeLoveNotPorn (MLNP) at TED2009, in an attempt to squash the myths of hardcore pornography and to begin a dialog around how people have sex in the real world.
MLNP is a social platform which encourages shareable sex content - in an attempt to extend the socio-cultural narrative surrounding honest and open sex. Cindy’s mission behind MLNP is for the site to be ultimately as influential and as pervasive as the current porn industry, whilst being a safe, trustworthy place to socially share your #realworldsex.
With over a million people signed up to the platform, from over 220 countries and territories, MLNP is making an impact, and it’s powerful.
MLNP has transformed the lives of so many people - from saving relationships and marriages, enabling victims of sexual assault to process trauma and reclaim their bodies, and creating a safe space for everyday contributors, known as MakeLoveNotPornstar’s. MLNP is helping end rape culture by highlighting how great consensual and communicative real-world sex is. Cindy recognises that the issue facing society is not porn, but rather the lack of discussion around sex in the real world.
MLNP acts as, as Cindy explains, “sex education through real world demonstration”.
Cindy’s vision is to expand the social sex universe through upscaling female-lens centred ventures globally by using her knowledge in advertising - we can’t wait to see what she has planned next!
Three things we learnt from Cindy’s talk
When we don't talk openly and honestly about sex, internet porn becomes sex education - this has hugely negative impacts on society
The way to end rape culture is to show great consensual and communicative sex in the real world and to make it aspirational, versus what is shown in porn and popular culture
When people openly talk about sex, victims of sexual abuse and violence will feel able to speak up and be believed'
